Saturday Movies The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

This modern take on a classic tale is almost a musical, although not officially. There are vibrant scenes with familiar pop tunes underpinning the drama and the decadence. Watching this movie makes you want to have lavish parties and long for the time of the roaring twenties. There of course is the beauty of the sweet romance between Gatsby and Daisy, that harkens back to pre-teen beliefs about what love was about. A great movie to watch for a pick me up when you need to be projected into a world of allure and fantasy.

Saturday Movies The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street

This movie is based on the real life story of Jordan Belfort. It recounts Belforts career as a stockbrocker on wall street and the lavish and drug induced life style that he led. If you ever wondered what it would be like to have more money than you can spend, and more power than is necessary, then watch this movie. Beware…this is not a sweet story. Instead what you will find is greed, lust, drugs wraped up in almost a cautionary tale, except for the part where he becomes a motivational speaker. Not for the faint of heart but for the indulgent.

Saturday Movies William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet

A retelling of the classic story of Romeo and Juliet. This one is a bit eccentric, which makes it more fun to watch. It features a young Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. The supporting cast really makes the movie, with colorful and lively performances. It also had a very popular soundtrack as well. This is a good movie to watch when you want something familiar that still has the ability to surprise and delight you.

Revolutionary Road

This movie looks light, but it handles some heavy topics. Set in 1950’s America, this film analyzes the question of what happens when what you have is not enough. Many people feel that they are to chase the “American Dream”, and once they get it, they are totally miserable. This movie shows characters who are in that place in life, and the hope that they have in being able to remake life by their own rules. But they find that they have gone so far, that there is not turning back.

Gangs of New York

This is like watching the wild west, except they are in New York. The drama and intensity in this movie is so strong that its hard to believe that this is based on real things that happened. Also hard to imagine that New York was so rural. The characters are so rich, you are immediately drawn into the story. Especially compelling is the undertone of how people have used differences as reasons to fight, and founds ways to build alliances.

Inception

If you are a dreamer, then you may like this movie. Its all about dreams, or dreams within dreams within dreams. One of those movies that you should watch closely. None of this getting up to answer the phone and I’ll pick up when I get back business. Cool action scenes that happen in slow motion…..really slow motion (depends on which dream you are in). Intellectual thriller with a romantic twist, although it is not a romantic film.
